TRILOGY 1 - PART 2: THE STRATEGY'S PERPETRATORS

TRILOGY 1 - PART 2: THE STRATEGY'S PERPETRATORS

Who Exactly Are the "Bene Elohim"? (Genesis 6:1-4)

Key Verse: "When human beings began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them, the sons of God (Bene Elohim) saw that the daughters of humans were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose." (Genesis 6:1-2)

A. Identifying the Enemy: Fallen Angels, Not Righteous Men

There are two main interpretations regarding the identity of the "Bene Elohim":

1.  Sethite Interpretation (Line of Seth): Views them as righteous descendants of Seth who married wicked descendants of Cain.

2.  Angelic Interpretation (Angelic Beings): Views them as supernatural beings (angels).

Why the Angelic Interpretation is Stronger

Terminology "Bene Elohim": This phrase is almost always used in the Old Testament for supernatural/divine beings (Job 1:6; 2:1; 38:7; Psalm 29:1; 89:7), not for righteous humans.

Context of Genesis 6: Their sin is described as something so extraordinary that it resulted in global judgment. Intermarriage between two groups of humans, while not ideal, is insufficient to explain the scale of evil and its consequences as described.

New Testament Testimony: New Testament writers explicitly identify them as fallen angels:

2 Peter 2:4-5: Links the sin of fallen angels with the time of Noah.

Jude 1:6-7: Directly equates angels who "did not keep their positions of authority" and "abandoned their proper dwelling" with those who "gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion" (referring to Genesis 6).

B. Initial Status: From Guardians to Traitors

Before their rebellion, these Bene Elohim were not lowly beings.

Heavenly Beings: They were part of the "host of heaven" or the "divine council" (1 Kings 22:19), who stood before God (Job 1:6).

Oversight Duty: Based on Daniel 4:13, 17, 23, there are entities called "watchers" (iyr) who are holy, who descend from heaven to deliver divine decrees. It is highly probable that the Bene Elohim were originally beings with such a task—to oversee and govern God's creation as His representatives.

Delegated Authority: They had access to God and likely had certain jurisdictions over worldly affairs. This status is what makes their fall so tragic and their sin so grievous.

C. Corrupted Initial Motivation: Sinful Pity

This is the core of this initially theory. Their motivation was likely complex and layered:

1.  Witnessing Suffering: After the Fall, humans lived in suffering, sickness, and death. Those tasked with "watching" would have witnessed this grim reality.

2.  Questioning God's Wisdom: Instead of remaining obedient and trusting in God's plan of redemption (Genesis 3:15), they began to question: "Why is God allowing this? Why isn't He doing something?"

3.  Arrogant Pity: Their "pity" turned into spiritual arrogance. They became convinced that they had a better solution than God's seemingly slow plan. They decided to "intervene" and "help" humanity.

4.  Transition from Pity to Lust: This already corrupted intention to "help" quickly degenerated into uncontrollable lust when they saw "that the daughters of humans were beautiful." Lust was a symptom, not the root cause. The root cause was disobedience and the desire to be like God by determining what is best for His creation—similar to the sin of Adam and Eve, but on a larger scale.

D. Exploitation by the Devil: The Mimic Leverages Weakness

The Devil did not create this rebellion out of a vacuum. He is a master manipulator who exploits existing weaknesses.

Tempting to Overstep Boundaries: The Devil, having fallen himself, tempted them with the same idea that successfully felled him: "You will be like God" (cf. Genesis 3:5). He whispered for them to overstep the boundaries of authority God had set.

Providing a False "Solution": The Devil likely justified their already corrupted intention to "help." "Look at human suffering! Don't just stand by. Descend and teach them knowledge that will advance them. Take wives and create a new mighty race that can overcome human limitations!" This is a mimicry of God's redemption plan—a false "redemption" offered by the Devil.

Leading the Rebellion: The Devil, as the leader of the fallen angels (Revelation 12:9), was likely the mastermind behind this coordinated strategy. He didn't just exploit individual rebellion, but directed it to serve his larger strategic purpose: corrupting the lineage.

Conclusion of Part 2:

The Bene Elohim were not a group of angels who suddenly became depraved. They were high-authority beings who rebelled progressively. Their fall began with a proud heart filled with disobedient "pity," was exploited by the Devil, and ended in the total corruption of themselves and God's creation. This understanding avoids oversimplifying their sin as mere sexual lust and places it in the context of a high-level spiritual rebellion aimed at thwarting God's plan for humanity.
